Shou Sugi Ban. A Brief History.
Shou Sugi Ban, also known as Yakisugi, derives from an ancient Japanese exterior cladding treatment used to preserve wood by charring it with fire. The treatment was introduced after Japan fell into short supply of driftwood which was collected from the coastlines for its prized appearance and durability after enduring a natural treatment process of saltwater, surf and sun.

Traditionally the timber used for charring was ‘Sugi’ wood, Cryptomeria, commonly known as Japanese Cedar which was used for residential exterior cladding, fencing and decking applications. The term Shou Sugi Ban 焼杉板 simply translates to ‘burnt cedar board’.

Shou Sugi Ban is simply a finishing option within the WOOD ELEMENTS range and as such reflects all the same specifications. The designer profile collective features include; a straight-line edging process to ensure the cladding is machined to a fine tolerance; relief grooves which are designed to take the stress out of the cladding; a specially designed ridge locater connects with the overlap line controlling the expansion allowance for any timber movement.

Shou Sugi Ban in our WOOD ELEMENTS range is a natural product, as such timber will expand and contract with climate and temperature changes. Hurford’s cladding is a renewable resource, providing an environmental advantage over common building materials. Timber will only perform within the limits of its natural properties, when specifying, it’s critical that the characteristics and properties of the timber are considered and determine how they will respond to the environment they are placed in. For further information see below our cladding maintenance and installation guide.

WOOD ELEMENTS trims which are also used for Shou Sugi Ban cladding provide a streamline finish and play an integral part in ensuring a water tight finish. All aluminium trims are factory fitted with waterproof gaskets*, designed to decrease the on-site sealing process, and delivery of loose materials. WOOD ELEMENTS trims are available in a black powder coated chromate treated aluminium.

End Matched

WOOD ELEMENTS end-match profile has a micro bevel edge designed to encourage water to drain away from the join. End matching the product means the boards can be fixed mid cavity batten, eliminating the need to dock and create volumes of waste that previously would have been thrown away.

Automatic Spacing System

This allows expansion to be placed between the boards, which is automatic and doesn’t require any special tools or spacers to get right. This unique design feature takes out any pressure caused if the boards expand due to absorption of moisture.

Charred Technique

Hurford’s quality hardwood species are used to manufacture Shou Sugi Ban, it is then charred locally in NZ. The fire treatment adds and additional barrier of protection against insect attack and decay with an even char. This also increases the stability and durability of the Shou Sugi Ban.

Straight Line Dressed

Hurfords uses a process to straighten boards post drying to ensure the boards are straight and stay straight. This ensures that WOOD ELEMENTS can be easily installed and all shadowlines remain as they have been designed – straight.
