DO’S, DON’TS & WHAT TO EXPECT FROM A SOLID TIMBER FLOOR

Move rugs and mats etc regularly to avoid patching and enable the floor to age more uniformly.

Do not use wet mops, abrasive or solvents based cleaners on you timber floor. Use a lightly dampened cloth or micro fibre mop. When vacuuming use the hard surface attachment.

When having timber flooring installed the skirtings must be removed, the substrate must be level to 3mm over 3m. Hurford Wholesale Ltd can quote this a part of an installation job if required.

The substrate must be sound, dry and clear of any debris.

We recommend all concrete be sealed regardless of age as we can’t see what’s on or under the concrete slab.

Do not install carpet or apply final coat of paint to walls prior to installation of flooring.

It is recommended that kitchens are installed after the timber flooring.

If possible it is recommended that alternate accommodation be used during the install process especially while the polyurethane is being applied to avoid exposure to the unpleasant odours.

Allow 24 hours for poly to dry before moving furniture onto new floor. It takes 10-14 days to fully cure.

Inform us of the expected start and finish dates of your project and keep us informed of any changes to the program.

Be wary that any silicone or silicone based product that comes into contact with the floor after sanding, but prior to any of the 3 coats have been done, will result in the coatings being rejected. Silicon can often be found on the footwear of plumbers, glaziers and other tradespeople.

Provide clear and safe access to site for workers.

Ensure that adequate lighting and power are available.

Gaps between floor boards are not filled the reason for this is because subsequent shrinkage and expansion in the timber will cause cracking in the filler. Any gaps at the end of the boards and any surface blemishes will be filled. If face nailed nails will be punched and filled.

A timber floor is made up of many pieces there will be many variations in grain, colour and or character in a timber floor. Samples and photos can only be used as an indication of a finished look as every floor is as individual as finger prints. Overtime the flooring will take on a natural patina becoming more uniform in appearance adding to the natural charm and beauty of your timber floor.

All timber floor surfaces will scratch and dent. It is important to minimise this with the use of:
• door mats at entrance ways to help keep stones and contaminants away from wooden flooring.
• the use of felt pads on furniture legs and bases.
• use castor cups on wheels.
• regularly trim pet claws.

As timber is a natural product that is influenced by its local environment there will be some thermal movement of timber flooring which may result in some gaps appearing. This is minimised by using kiln dried timber, acclimatising the timber in the local environment it is to be installed in and using the right timber for your environment.

Timber flooring is a healthy option that greatly reduces dust mites that are known to cause Asthma. Pet hair and dirt are easily removed maintaining a clearer healthier living environment.

As the finishing coatings are not applied in a sterile paint booth environment some dust or dirt may be evident in the finish. It is not practical or reasonable to expect a furniture finish on a floor.

Whilst the floor sanders have dust extractors on them and the sander will vacuum several times before applying the first coat and again between coats it is impossible to remove all the dust from the air so it is important not to open doors and windows creating a draught whilst the finish coatings are drying to minimise any contaminates in the finish coat. Tell the installers of any draughts unique to your environment. There will be some dust evident throughout the rest of the house.

A timber floor will retain its original quality throughout it life as long as it is correctly cared for and maintained lasting up to 10 times longer than the average carpet adding real value to your property while providing a clearer and healthier living environment.

A transparent finish will deepen the natural colour to timber flooring enhancing its natural beauty. Light will continue to deepen the timbers colour in a pleasing way by slowly darkening the timber itself and the finishing material. The amount of darkening will depend on the type of timber, the finish used and its local environment.
